FORBES, Robert James - April 26, 1950 - June 26, 2015. With great sadness we announce that peacefully on June 26, 2015 at Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, our father and grandfather Rob passed away at the age of 65 years. He leaves to mourn his children Matthew (Melanie) and Amanda (Kennedy); grandchildren Mia and Seth; former wife Janet; sisters Bonnie (Brian) and Jayne (Gordon); cherished friends John and Karen Deans, Tim and Bev O'Rourke and Vic Kostenchuk, as well as many friends and relatives across Canada. Rob was predeceased by his parents Alex and Julie Forbes, and beloved pets Snooper and Bessie. Born in Woodstock, Ontario he was active in hockey, football and golf, and continued to be an avid sports fan throughout his life. He and his friend John spent many hours playing in the back lane between their homes often in pretend military related maneuvers. He had a keen interest in history, specifically the history of Canada's military forces and World War II. He began his career with Thomson Newspapers at the Woodstock Sentinel Review in 1971 and retired as publisher of the Brandon Sun in 1999. In between he worked for the Chatham Daily News, Welland and Port Colborne Tribune, Oshawa Times, Orangeville Banner, Barrie Examiner and at Thomson head office in Toronto. He later went on to work in the Maritimes. He loved the newspaper and publishing world. Too many to mention, many of his colleagues became his life time friends. Rob was known as being the first one to arrive and leave from events. He would arrive extremely early so he could get the best parking spot that allowed him to be the first one out of the lot. To avoid traffic congestion, it was common for him to miss game changing moments at sporting events and have to hear about them on the radio during the drive home. He left us too early, and we miss him deeply. We will cherish his memories. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place. A service to celebrate Rob's life will be held in Southern Ontario in September. BARDAL FUNERAL HOME AND CREMATORIUM 843 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba 204-774-7474 Condolences: www.bardal.ca
