ORTNER, Murray

A limb has fallen from our family tree...

Murray Gordon Ortner passed away peacefully at home on March 18, 2021 at the age of 75. With our broken hearts, Murray has been reunited with his dad, Henry (1991), his mom, Edna (2015) and his sisters, Betty (2017) and Marjorie (2012). Leaving behind his loving wife of 56 years, Jean (Clare); his children Chris and Connie, Brad and Catherine, Sheri and Jamie. Cherished grandchildren Adam and Teresa, Joshua and Taylor, Brandon. Adored great-grandchildren Bo and Carlie. Loving son-in-law of Velda Haycock and Patricia Clare; brother-in-law Larry Hudson and step sister Mary Esther McGhie. Murray is survived by Jean's family; Ruth Ann (Allen), Sharon (Dave) and Barry, Cathy and Roger, Ron and Dianne, Don and Patty, Nancy (Ken), Sandra, Barb, David and Sandy, Cindy and Ross, Sherrill and Roy, Karen and Mark, Jamie and Annette, Gary and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by fathers-in-law Murray Haycock, Harold Clare, stepfather Jack Wilbee and brother-in-law Joe McKiernan.

Murray was born in Vanessa and moved to Newark in 1948. He was a lifelong member of the Newark United Church. Murray played, coached, and umpired baseball and served as president of the Tillsonburg Umpire Association. He played and coached hockey. One of his proudest accomplishments was leading the Norwich Greenshirts to championships. He served as president of the Norwich Minor Hockey. Most of Murray's life was spent driving truck. After 16 years of driving milk truck, he became an owner operator for 22 years. Murray loved the boat and spending time at the Bluebill marina. After retiring, he enjoyed woodworking. Once moving to Valley Creek Estates, Murray loved the campfires, potluck suppers and weekly games of marbles. He spent many hours sitting on the back deck enjoying the sunshine and watching the birds. The past year was difficult for Murray and at his request, cremation has taken place. A private family burial will take place in Vanessa at a later date. Arrangements have been entrusted to Arn-Lockie Funeral Home, 519-863-3020.
