Age 92, passed peacefully on Saturday, June 22, 2019, at Woodingford Lodge in Ingersoll, Ontario.

Lucie was born in Holland, one of 13 children, on September 4, 1926, to Cornelis and Elisabeth (Verheggen). She married Gerard (Gerry) Slykerman in 1949, and they immigrated to Canada the same year. They settled in the Ingersoll area and raised a family of six children. Gerry worked for a local coal company, eventually purchasing it. Lucie and Gerry transformed the business into a building supply company and later to Riverside Concrete. After Gerry's death in 1980, Lucie continued to run the family business for many years with the help of her two sons, Gerry (junior) and Nick.

Lucie's quiet dignity, tolerance, and openness to the opinions of others are among the characteristics that family and friends admired. Widowed too early, she became comfortable with herself and valued her independence. She was always available to listen, and to help her family and extended family.

Lucie is survived by her sister Leni (Theo) Verbeek in Holland, daughters Betty Green and Lucy (Ken Craven) Slykerman, sons Nick (Cathy Dos Santos) and Joe Slykerman, grandchildren Allison, Garrett (Heather), Jacob (Kendra), David (Taralyn), Andrea (Leslie), and Christine (Kevin). There are also several great-grandchildren. Mourning her passing are many brothers- and sisters-in-law including Anne, Peter (Kathy), and Jack (Rita) who live locally while many more live in Holland. She will also be missed by many nieces and nephews living in Canada and Holland.

Lucie was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerry, 11 siblings, daughter Margaret (Keith) Pyett, and son Gerry Slykerman.

Cremation has taken place and will be followed at a later date by interment at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Ingersoll. Family, friends, and others whose lives Lucie touched are invited to a Celebration of Life from 2PM to 5PM on Sunday, September 8, 2019 at the Ingersoll Golf Club, 51 Holcroft Street West, Ingersoll, N5C 3K1.

The family thank all the caregivers who assisted Lucie while she lived independently in her home. We would also like to extend our gratitude to all the staff at Woodingford Lodge in Ingersoll who cared for her during the past four months. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Lucie's honour to the Canadian Cancer Society.
