t is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eric "Mr. V." van Amerom at the age of 71 on April 19, 2019, at 3:15 pm, in hospice at Sakura House in Woodstock, Ontario while holding the hand of his loving partner. Eric passed away from complications related to COPD but did so peacefully and without pain. He is survived by his wife, Helen, whom he remarried on March 12, 2019 to represent that they have always been life partners.
He leaves behind his son, Harold and fiancée Shandelle Salter (Woodstock); his daughter Deborah and partner Shawn Back (Toronto); his daughter Jennifer Drolet and husband Mike (Toronto); and his son Christopher (Woodstock). Eric enjoyed the moments he shared with his 8 grandchildren - Jessica, Alexander, Andrea, Chloe; Sophie; Abagail, Reid, and Louise.
He also leaves behind his mother, Irene, brother Lody (Annette), and sister Patricia Meyers (Henry) also from Woodstock, his brother Roy (Denise) from London, and brother Rene (Ann) from Kamloops, BC. He will be missed by his large extended family, in-laws, and friends including the Tjias and Martens.
Born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on March 29, 1948, Eric moved with his family to The Netherlands at the approximate age of 13. In 1968, alongside his brother and friend, Eric immigrated to Canada for new opportunities. Shortly thereafter they sponsored his parents and siblings into the country. Eric and Helen's families were once neighbours in Europe and reunited in Canada in 1969, which is when their almost 50-year relationship began.
An accomplished CNC machinist, Eric spent the bulk of his career as a supervisor on the night shift. Known for his love of music Eric continued playing his guitars, his prized possessions, until the end. Despite limited resources he was generous to a fault, always sharing all he had. His last wish was to ask for assurance that his wife be loved and supported for all her days; that his acts of goodwill be returned to her.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, April 24, 2019 from 12 noon-12:45 pm at Smith-LeRoy Funeral Home, 69 Wellington Street North, Woodstock. A Funeral Service will be held immediately afterwards at 1 pm followed by a Procession to Oxford Memorial Park Cemetery. A Celebration of Life will be hosted at Dino's Dining Lounge at 510 Dundas St. starting at 4 pm. All will be welcomed.
In lieu of flowers and in memory of Eric, donations to Sakura House would be appreciated. Eric's family wishes to thank their team for their support during his stay in their facility. SMITH-LEROY FUNERAL HOME, 519-537-3611. Personal condolences may be sent at www.smithleroy.com
