PATTERSON, Florence Lilian (Pelton) - The death of Florence Lilian (Pelton) Patterson of Hillside Manor occurred Thursday, March 31, 2016. Born in the Township of West Zorra, Oxford County, she was the youngest daughter of Lionel Pelton and Janet McDonald of Embro, Ontario. She was predeceased by her husband, Don Patterson 1971, her sisters Emma 1981 and Jessie in 2010, her brother McDonald Pelton and her nieces Marilyn in 1982 and Reta in 2011. She is survived by her brother Lewis Pelton of Embro and her nephew Kenneth Huether. As well by grandnieces and grandnephews, Susan Walker, Patti Huether, Kate Huether, David Otton and Dan Otton. Florence was the first permanent employee of the Stratford Shakespearean Festival when it was founded in 1952 and where she was not only Secretary to the Board of Directors, but the only person in the management office during those difficult times when City Council turned down the Board's request for $5,000 to open the Festival Office. Everyone worked harder than ever and against all odds, to open on time in the tent theatre on July 13, 1953, to rave reviews and world-wide acclaim. However, success brought an entirely new set of problems to be faced each day. The same summer, the National Film Board from Ottawa, Ontario came to town to begin filming The Stratford Adventure, she assisted them as well with casting and locations. She left the Festival in 1956 to join the Canadian Players touring company. Later she was engaged by other professional performing arts groups such as the Canadian Conference of the Arts, the Canadian Theatre Centre in Toronto, the Dawson City Festival in the Yukon and the Elwood Emerick Management of New York, prior to moving to Prince Edward Island where her husband had purchased a motel. Following the death of her husband, she returned to Stratford in 1976 and was asked to rejoin the Festival staff where she stayed until retirement at which time she was the Assistant to the Producer. In retirement, she traveled widely and began a flower garden. As well she planted several trees on the Tom Patterson Island through the Stratford Parks Board in memory of friends and family. She began researching through the internet her various family roots and produced many of her family's histories. Her family genealogies will be placed in the Oxford County Genealogical Societies offices in Woodstock for research and preservation. Her last project was the sponsorship of a young girl to a 4 year university course in Phnom Penh, Cambodia through The Windsor International School of English. She was a member of the Stratford Horticultural Society, Gallery 96, PALS, Gallery Stratford, Clan Mackay Association of Canada and the Clan Donald Association of Canada. In keeping with her request there will be no funeral home visitation or service. Interment will take place in the North Embro Cemetery. Trees have been planted on Tom Patterson Island in memory of Florence and Don. Arrangements entrusted to the W.G. YOUNG FUNERAL HOME , 430 Huron Street, Stratford. 519.271.7411 www.wgyoungfuneralhome.com
