GURNEY, Taya Shaune - Passed away peacefully at McMaster Children's Hospital surrounded by her family in her mother's arms on Wednesday, September 30, 2015 in her 9th year. Cherished daughter of Alicia (nee Walters) & John VanHalteren of Port Dover. Loving sister of Koen Walters, Cole Helms-Gurney and Alexis VanHalteren. Proud granddaughter of Mark Walters & Donna Eaton & the late (Cathy Keeton 2008), Dennis & Marg Gurney, John & Debra VanHalteren and great granddaughter of Patricia & Don Walters & Marie Scott. Taya will be lovingly remembered by her aunts and uncles Matt Walters (Jenn), Josh Eaton (Amber), Guy Eaton (Tanya), Jeremy Eaton (Liz), Kelly Aitchison (Nate), Jenn Gurney-Ozog (Mike) and Matt Gurney (Katie) and her many cousins and extended family. Taya's fight was brief after suffering an asthma attack. Her sweet body was placed on life support and she granted friends, family and loved ones from near and far the opportunity to say one last goodbye. Her time on earth was blessed and filled with every opportunity this life could grant her. Taya was born a fighter being 2 months premature; she defied the odds after being diagnosed with a rare infant seizure disorder at the age of 8 months. She developed Cerebral Palsy and was eventually given the coolest hot pink and zebra striped wheelchair where she gained her independence. Nothing in life stopped Taya from learning and progressing and filling the hearts of everyone who met her with love, compassion and most of all laughter. She travelled to destinations near and far, she's flown on a plane, swam in the ocean, experienced the fun of Disneyland, camped, biked, boated and four-wheeled. Taya was an adventurer always willing to try new things and always seeking the most thrilling of adventures. Over the years Taya has attended preschool at Just 4 Mom's and Kids in Scotland, ON, & Parkway Daycare in Townsend, ON. Her time there was cherished by all who worked with her and she loved the friends she made which was evident in the excitement she showed upon arriving each day. Taya is going to be greatly missed by all her teachers, classmates, friends and staff at W. Ross Macdonald School and the two fabulous ladies who made Taya's morning each day when they arrived to pick her up on the school bus. She blossomed into who she is because of so many people actively involved in her life on a daily basis. Taya has touched the lives of so many and for that, we her family are eternally grateful and her legacy will live in the hearts and minds of everyone who knew her. Friends are invited to share in their memories of Taya with her family at the JASON SMITH FUNERAL CHAPEL 689 Norfolk St. N., Simcoe for Visitation on Monday, October 5th, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. A funeral service will be held for Taya in the chapel on Tuesday morning at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ron Mullin officiating. Interment to follow at Port Dover Cemetery. Those wishing to make a donation in memory of Taya are asked to consider the Ronald McDonald House Hamilton, McMaster Children's Hospital Hamilton or Lansdowne Children's Centre Brantford.
