HOWES, Nathan Roger - Nov. 14, 1927 - Mar. 6, 2015. Roger was 87 when he passed away in the Hope Street Terrace Nursing Home early Friday morning. He is survived by his loving wife Shirley of almost 39 years, daughter Darlene Lois (Terrance) Fallow, sons Clifford Alan Howes (Anna Lipcsey) and Sydney Graham (Jane) Howes, stepdaughter Paula Louise (Lawrence) Laycock and stepson Michael Paul MacCrone. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren. Roger was one of 8 children born to Nathan Micajah Howes and Olive Mae (nee) Moffatt, and survived by sisters Olive Isabel (Frederick - deceased) Archer and Barbara Jacqueline Cornelius (Donald) Denby of Woodstock, and brother Mark James (Ellen) Howes of Clinton. Predeceasing Roger was brother Sydney Micajah Howes (Ottawa - 1977) and sisters Reta Irene Duke (Peterborough - 2001), Lois Muriel Jones (Woodstock - 2014), and Lola Genevieve Kelly (Woodstock - 2015), and first wife Doris Velma (nee) Rouse (Oshawa - 2010). Roger retired in 1984 culminating a 34 year career with Ralston Purina (Woodstock, Whitby, Addison) after which he and Shirley lived for 28 years in Baltimore, Ontario before moving to Oshawa in 2013. The couple spent winters travelling Mexico and the southern USA in a motorhome, until finally settling in their winter home in Texas. There was nothing Roger couldn't design, build or fix; he was a true 'jack-of-all-trades'. In his younger years, Roger was a boater and spent summer weekends water-skiing at Park Haven outside of Woodstock. He took his family on camping trips throughout Ontario, to the east coast, the west coast and across the USA from California to Massachusetts. Roger was an avid sailor, spending many hours sailing out of the Whitby Yacht Club. He also sailed the Caribbean. Visitation will begin at 1 pm on Saturday, March 14 at the Westminster United Church, 1850 Rossland Road East, Whitby (905) 723-6442 followed by funeral services at 2 pm, after which a reception will be held at the church. The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Roger's favourite charity, the Salvation Army.
