LONG, Ernest - Passed away peacefully at The Brant Centre, Burlington, on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at the age of 88. Survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Loreen and his children Dennis (Julie), Gayle (Jim) and Monica (Peter). He will be missed by his grandchildren, Brenna (John), Andrew (Melissa), Megan (Julien), Lauren (Jonathon), Luke (Kaitlin), Leora (Gareth) and Joel (Rochelle), as well as his 8 great-grandchildren. Born in 1925, Ernie was a veteran of WWII and returned to his birthplace of Woodstock to march in every Remembrance Day Parade in honour of his brother Gordon who died in the war. He was a very active member of his church and a lay preacher throughout his life. A Past Master of the Oxford Masonic Lodge in Woodstock, Ernie continued as a member of the Ancient Landmark Masonic Lodge in Hamilton. Ernie sat on the Board of Directors of Woodview School for many years. Prior to retiring, he worked for CUMIS Insurance for 25 years. His loves were woodworking, winemaking and he belonged to the Burlington Wine Guild. He was an aficionado of the opera and he loved musical theatre. Among his favourite activities were camping, spending time at the cottage and wilderness canoe trips. Ernie was warm and friendly and had many friends. He was happiest when surrounded by his family. A Celebration of his life will be held at SMITH'S FUNERAL HOME , 1167 Guelph Line (one stoplight north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333), on Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at 1 pm. With reception to follow at the funeral home. Cremation has taken place.
